National experiment with Open Access for academic books in the Netherlands

 

In a period of two years, at least 50 academic books in various disciplines will be made freely available through the internet upon publication. Academic publishers will receive a publication fee for the Open Access edition. The project, called OAPEN-NL, aims to gain experience with this new publishing model for books and to gather data about the effects of Open Access book publishing. The books will be collected in the OAPEN Library (www.oapen.org) that was launched last week at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

 

The project will be conducted by OAPEN (Open Access Publishing in European Networks) in collaboration with NWO (Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research) and SURFfoundation (Netherlands Alliance for innovation in Higher Education and Research). The project is financed with support from the government (through the national ICT programme PRIMA) and NWO.  

 

OAPEN-NL is open for participation from all academic book publishers, but will primarily concern research supported by NWO. A Selection Committee will be installed to guarantee an independent and balanced selection of academic books. 

 

The project results will be evaluated by a Monitoring Committee, consisting of representatives of the above mentioned organizations and representatives of the Royal Netherlands Academy for Arts and Sciences, the Netherlands Association for University Libraries and the National library, and the Association of Universities in the Netherlands. With the help of the Monitoring Committee we hope the project will result in national recommendations for Open Access book publishing, which will make it the first experiment with OA books on a national scale.

OAPEN aims to develop and implement an Open Access publication model for academic books in the Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS). Our goal is to achieve a sustainable European approach to improve the quantity, visibility and usability of high quality academic research and foster the creation of new content by developing future-oriented publishing solutions, including an Open Access Library for peer reviewed books in HSS. The 30-months project started in September 2008.
